Jim Spruce has been superintendent of the Illinois District since September 2003, following seven years of service as the Nebraska District Superintendent. Pastorates have been at Flint (Central), Michigan; Centralia, Washington; Houston, Texas; Champaign and Belleville, Illinois; and Cadillac, Michigan. He was ordained in 1970.
Spruce has served as a member of the General Curriculum Committee and General NYI Council. He is currently a member of the USA Course of Study Advisory Council, Board of Pensions and Benefits, NPH Book Committee, General Church Loan Fund Committee and General Board. The author of three books, numerous articles and adult Sunday School lessons, he is a graduate of Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University), (B.A.), Nazarene Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and McCormick Theological Seminary (D.Min.).
Born in Blytheville, Arkansas in 1942 and reared in Nazarene parsonages, Jim married Karen Aller of Nampa, Idaho in 1963. Karen received a degree in music education at BNC. The Spruces have two daughters, Cynthia Grinder and Sharolyn Whitehurst, both of Nampa, Idaho, and a son, Steve, of Springfield. Jim and Karen have four grandchildren.
